Learning to Write and Spell in LLI

We love our WRITING DAYS.  Every second lesson in LLI is a Writing lesson.  We write about the text we have read.

When we write we talk about our writing.  We use our 5 Star Writing strategies. We THINK, SAY and WRITE. We begin each  sentences with a capital letter. We leave a finger space between words. We use our SOUNDING OUT strategies to spell words. We use full stops at the end of each sentence.

The purpose of reading is understanding. Constructing meaning is the goal of comprehension.  We want students to MONITOR & ENHANCE their UNDERSTANDING, actively USE KNOWLEDGE and develop INSIGHT!

Our comprehension strategies include :

Today we found common patterns in words. If we can read and spell the word ‘at’ then we can read and spell the words ‘cat’, ‘mat’, ‘hat’ and ‘sat’.

Welcome to Dani’s LLI Blog

Welcome to Dani’s LLI Blog.  This semester I have been working with some of our Year One students and what a busy year it has been so far.

During Term One the LLI sessions concentrated on developing and improving students’ phonological awareness. Students were involved in completing tasks such as identifying letter names and their related sounds, counting syllables, detecting and producing rhymes, blending and segmenting CVC words, identifying onsets and final sounds and segmenting blends.

In Term Two the emphasis shifted to applying this phonological knowledge to support students in reading levelled texts independently.  Explicit teaching of a variety of decoding and comprehension strategies were a major focus within each lesson.  Explicit teaching of fundamental writing strategies was also included to assist students to record simple, well-structured and grammatically correct sentences about the texts studied.

It has been an amazing term and the students have worked really hard to improve their reading.

Congratulations to all the LLI students you should be very proud of your efforts!
